Re: Hardware Recovery Updates

bfmorse, you are right. I'm guessing the system is ready and final checks are going on (much like the gifts under the tree) and I'm waiting for them to double check it all and flip the switch (much like waiting for parents to wake up before I'm allowed to open the gifts).

I keep coming back and checking the forums to see if today is the day.

I have a bit more pessimistic view. It is like watching a sick person on a bed. Will they improve, get up, and start walking or take their last breath. Hope for the former; fear for the latter. sad

Re: March 20, 2023 Hardware Recovery Update

MarkH

I have been on WCG since the first week IBM started it. During the down times with Krembel, I looked at other BIONC projects. I had Einstein@home going for a while, but it really isn't they type of project I want to contribute to long term.

I have been running Folding@home for the last week. Good program and the types of projects I want to contribute to. The folding@home WUs run considerably longer than WCG WUs. CPU task run up to 3 days and GPU tasks can run 4-8 hours. And each CPU tasks use multiple threads.

Since F@H doesn't use BOINC, I can see lots of contention for system resources unless you limit the threads for F@H.... but that could significantly impact the length of time to complete a F@H work unit.

When/if WCG comes back, I will probably reconfigure everything and dedicate the GPU to F@H, and the CPU to WCG. OPNG has been hit or miss on WU availability anyway.

The next decision point will depend on how reliable the WCG runs. I am done with continually hitting the retry button to get WU downloaded from WCG. ARP is my favorite WCG project so hopefully it will be stable and I will continue WCG until at least the end of ARP.

Re: March 20, 2023 Hardware Recovery Update

Once we get going again there will be very heavy demand initially which should reduce after a few days. Until then do not expect them to have sufficient capacity for up- or down-loading. What will really matter is whether they have enough capacity for when demand stabilises.

Re: March 20, 2023 Hardware Recovery Update

I only found out about this when I checked the back room box. I have several W.U.s well out of time now, but the box is crunching away on other projects, so I'm not bothered. It will resolve itself sooner or later.

I am doing exactly the same as you. F@H & WCG work together quite well I have found.

Re: March 20, 2023 Hardware Recovery Update

Well, I came onto this thread and looked at the Opening Post - hoping that I'd see the update for the 28th of March 2023, but, no.... Nothing.

Please, please, please WCG, can you add a brief comment of what's happened today (even if it's saying in essence "no progress today") to the OP of this thread - then, we at least have some idea of what's going on and the likely timescales we're talking about.

Managing the users expectations is the key aspect in keeping the users happy (or at least, not grumbling/leaving for pastures new). This is something I've learnt in over 30 years of working in the IT field.

@Cyclops
I am hoping that you can share more day-by-day details on how things are progressing with the recovery.

I had sent several emails to the support mail but it seems that no one is available to respond to those emails.

Cyclops: Please create a locked thread with only the Krembil updates. The signal to noise ratio in the threads you create are very low.

Cheers coffee

Re: March 20, 2023 Hardware Recovery Update

So far, updates from Krembil aren´t shining examples of concise information and realistic planning either, in my opinion.
