Re: Minnesota Crunchers

In 120 years of record keeping those two places have always had snow cover by Christmas.
I am guessing the weather records in Helsinki go back much much further than ours.
Cheers

Actually Helsinki was some backforest crappytown those days, Finland capital was Turku on old days.
It kind of burn down on 1827 and along with that Turku's Academy was moved to Helsinki. And after that, there has been regular data from Helsinki.
This is oldest chart I was able to found:

Upper one is temp on Xmas eve and lower one amout of snow.

Apropoo, here is my most favorite firewall blushing
Littelary it is not park as primary function, originally it is firewall to separate city blocks.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

If the challenge is cpu only, pass on it. My 7950 is crunching 12 and my 7870 is crunching 10. Don't want to mess with the loss in points by switching.

The challenge is all HCC points -- both GPU and CPU count. My thought was that it might be fun for Minnesota Crunchers to enter, without anyone changing how they're already crunching. Some of you are getting such huge numbers of GPU points for HCC that my guess is that the team would be near the top without anybody doing anything special.

The team called My Online Team runs challenges for all the WCG sciences every month, so they're not a big deal like the SETI birthday challenge. It's likely that there will continue to be HCC GPU WUs through Dec (no guarantee obviously), so that would be a good month to participate.

At first I could not find it, I was too dumb to look at page 2. Ok, now we are in. I hope the supply holds out. Everybody have fun with it.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

This last weekend into Tuesday my son and his girlfriend, the wife and myself went birding at Sax-Zim bog and the north shore. We were able to see a Great Grey owl at the bog. That was way cool but not fast enough to get a picture.

The last 10 pix are from our outing. The Glaucous and Black Backed gulls are rare for MN. We even got to report to the moumn.org two late migrants, a Hermit Thrush and a Cardinal. Both not common in late November that far north. It was snowing quite hard at times. The thrush was a tough one to get since he was on the other side of gooseberry falls and snowing "to beat the band". The Pine Grosbeaks are stunning up close. All in all a fun and snowy few days! biggrin

Agree!

How are Duluth and Gooseberry park? Has everything been repaired since their flood? I remember pictures of washed out bridges and roads.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

sad sad Another tragedy this morning. A police officer was killed late last night in the small town of Cold Spring very near to here. Our county averages about 1 murder per year and now there have been two in about a month. Life is fragile, live yours wisely.

Everything looks pretty good in Duluth proper but there are some business's at the Miller Mall area still closed. Probably no insurance.

Some lightening smile

Friend of mine took part to Movember.
Some jolly good ranking indeed for first timer, way to go!
What makes this funny, is that he notice that his wife can grow more hair on her's armpit, than than he can put on his upper lip biggrin

So funny.

I was there a week after the storm. They were ready, and advertising, for tourists but were still cleaning up in the downtown area. The interstate was still bordered with sand washed down from the hill. The lake was red from the iron in the flood waters that had washed in and there were whole uprooted trees floating just offshore.
My wife and I were also there just a week ago. In the tourist areas, we saw no sign that anything had happened. We did have to take a detour to our destination due north of town, many culverts are being replace with bridges in case a storm like this comes through again.
