Re: Minnesota Crunchers

12.5 % of my IT department laid-off last Friday. 2 of them were members of MC.
sad

Very sad to hear of this. Hope they find new jobs in a short time. It is a tough time to be looking for employment. Not that it might do any good, but I'll keep my ear to the ground and let you know if anything shakes out.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I need to explain this biggrin

Here in investment slang is expression: "tehdä turskaa/get cod". It literally means fish, not c.o.d.
It means that if somebody looses lot money on market, slang saying would be: he/she get cod(fish).

Icelanders did buy shares from Finish insure company last year may, and now when they need to sell like h*ll, they lost attest 1 000 000 000€ for this very short market operation.

On that news, text says: "cod on image".
And this is main economic newspaper here, so funny.

I lol this for five minutes.

Interesting expression. I see today the premier of Iceland is going to Russia to ask for a 5,000,000,000 euro loan to help it bail out its banking system.
Today was even worse than yesterday in the markets. Two items rule in markets: fear and greed. Today it was fear's turn. Maybe for a few days yet.

Most in Minnesota know what cod is. There will be much lutefisk (ludefisk) eaten here in the next few months. I think the main maker of it in Minneapolis is the world's largest producer. It was even featured in a song called "Lutefisk Lament"

The smell of lutefisk creeped down the hall
and wilted a plant in a pot on the wall.
The others reacted as though they were smitten,
while the aroma laid low my small helpless kitten.

I tasted it only once ... that was enough. laughing It is not for the faint of heart ... or the weak of stomach. wink

Interesting expression.

Here is some more:

Good fish (deal that make profit) is salmon.

Buyin stock's is called "jig fishing (icefishing)".

Here the biggest fish are on bottom of lake, so everybody try get their lure deep as possible.
Same goes with stock market, everybody try get their offer so low as they think somebody is going to bite it. Lower it goes, bigger the fish (cheaper price=more stock same money).

Those Icelanders has get a lot cod lately biggrin
So funny, better them than us, jaadi jaadi jaa...

If I can find the audio of it I will post the link. You really need to hear it in a scandanavian accent. It is one of those items which you either like or hate, there is no in between. It is a staple of quite a number of Lutheran church dinners in Minnesota.

Cheers

Just remember it is not how deep you fish, its how you wiggle the bait.
